Ball valves are quarter-turn isolation valves. They excel at fast, tight on/off shut-off and are easily automated. Knowing their strengths and limits helps you use them correctly.
Industrial Process Systems
Isolation, diverting and automated process ball valves for plant piping, packaged skids and OEM equipment.
Steam & Utility Systems
Utility ball valves for steam, condensate, compressed air, nitrogen, cooling water and HVAC circuits.
Applications by media
| Media | Suggested ball valve |
|---|---|
| Water, air, inert gases | Two-piece, threaded, flanged |
| Hydrocarbons, fuels | Carbon steel, forged, trunnion |
| Steam & condensate | Carbon steel / forged with high-temperature seats |
| Acids & alkalis | PTFE lined, SS316 (media dependent) |
| Viscous / solidifying media | Jacketed, full bore |
| Hydraulic & instrument lines | High pressure, mini |
| Tank & reactor outlets | Flush bottom |
When not to use a ball valve
- Continuous throttling – standard balls erode seats when held partly open; use a control or globe valve, or a characterised ball with a modulating actuator.
- Very high temperatures beyond seat limits – consider metal-seated designs or other valve types.
- Heavily abrasive slurries – discuss with our team; knife gate or other valve types may be better.
