Quick specifications
- Jacket mediaSteam / thermic fluid / hot water
- BodySS, CS
- EndsFlanged
- OperationLever, gear, actuator
- UseViscous / solidifying media
Some process fluids – resins, waxes, molten sulphur, bitumen, polymers, fats and concentrated solutions – thicken or solidify if they cool. A valve is the coldest point in a traced line, and a plug of solid media can jam it. A jacketed ball valve surrounds the valve body with a jacket through which steam, hot water or thermic fluid circulates, keeping the media fluid right through the valve.
Specifying a jacketed ball valve
- Process media and the temperature it must be held at.
- Heating medium and its pressure / temperature.
- Jacket connection size and type.
- Line size, pressure class and end connection.
Operating tips
Heat the jacket before opening the valve after a shutdown so that any solidified media in the cavity melts first. Insulate jacket connections to reduce heat loss.

Frequently asked questions
What is a jacketed ball valve used for?
To handle fluids that would solidify or become too viscous if they cooled, by heating the valve body with steam or thermic fluid.
What heating media can be used?
Steam, hot water or thermic fluid, depending on the temperature required.
Can a jacketed ball valve be actuated?
Yes, with pneumatic or electric actuators sized for the valve torque.
