A manual ball valve is opened and closed by hand with a quarter turn. The lever position shows at a glance whether the valve is open (lever in line with the pipe) or closed (across the pipe). Manual valves are the most common choice for isolation points that are operated occasionally and are easily accessible.
Lever or gear operator?
Lever operation is standard for small and medium sizes. As size and pressure increase, the torque needed to turn the ball rises; a gear operator (handwheel with worm gear) reduces the effort and gives slow, controlled operation that also helps prevent water hammer. Our team sizes the operator to the valve torque.
Useful options
- Padlocking devices to lock the valve open or closed for safety.
- Stem extensions for insulated lines or buried valves.
- ISO 5211 mounting pad so the valve can be automated later without changing the valve.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if a manual ball valve is open?
When the lever is parallel to the pipe the valve is open; when it is perpendicular the valve is closed.
When is a gear operator needed?
When the valve torque is too high for comfortable lever operation – typically larger sizes or higher pressure classes.
Can a manual ball valve be converted to automatic?
Yes, if it has an ISO mounting pad. An actuator can be mounted with a suitable bracket and coupling.
